“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” ― Mother Teresa
In the past, I never really understood how getting involved and “giving back” could be so rewarding. We were at a party one night for Mike Nelson. At that party we were talking with several of Mike’s friends and one gentleman said, “if you know Mike Nelson, then you are involved in charity work.” That was almost four years ago and Mike and Cindy Nelson have personally had us involved in many charities.
One of the most recent charities we are involved with is the Matthew Shepard Foundation. In 2012 we donated a core drilled rock fountain. In 2013 we are donating a fully stocked Koi pond. As we sat and listened to Judy tell the story of her amazing son, we were truly amazed at not only the amount of hate still in this world, but the ability of Judy and husband Dennis to forgive and champion Matthew’s cause. Since that night I have worn the Matthew Shepard Erase Hate bracelet. Many of you have already asked me about it and I will tell the story to whoever will listen. This foundation is truly amazing. If you wish to get involved please check out their website: www.matthewshepard.org
Another charity we give to is the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. Elizabeth Glaser contracted HIV in a blood transfusion in 1981 while giving birth to her daughter, Ariel. She and her husband, Paul, later learned that Elizabeth had unknowingly passed the virus on to Ariel through breast milk and that their son, Jake, had contracted the virus in utero. The Glasers discovered, in the course of trying to treat Ariel, that drug companies and health agencies had no idea that HIV was prevalent among children. The only drugs on the market were for adults; nothing had been tested or approved for children. Learn more about the Glaser family’s story and what they are doing at their web site.
